Chapter Seventeen

Patrick left the funeral through the back door and had planned to go directly to his car, but his cell phone rang. It was Lee, and the signal wasn’t good in the back lot, so he walked to the end of the driveway. Lee wanted to let him know he planned to lighten his load for the next two weeks to give him time to catch up with school.

“I’ll need you more as a lawyer than I need you now,” Lee said.

Patrick thanked him and looked around after he disconnected. The sun was shining, and people were in no hurry to move into the reception hall, despite the chill. As his eyes moved through the crowd, he spotted a man sitting by himself on a bench across the street, but halfway down the block. There was something familiar about him, about the way he held his cigarette to the side of his mouth and the particular flick of his wrist as he shook off the ashes. Patrick started to walk toward him, planning to casually pass by for a closer look, but the man rose and walked briskly further down the street, away from the funeral home and past the reception. If Patrick followed him now, it would be obvious. So, he walked to his car and cruised the block, hoping for another glimpse. He couldn’t find him anywhere. Maybe his mind was playing tricks on him, but he doubted it. The feeling was too strong. He knew that guy.

Patrick headed toward the law library, where his study group had finally managed to reserve a room, but he couldn’t get the man off his mind. He knew he had taken a risk staying here in Seneca Springs, where he had conducted his last undercover investigation as an FBI agent, after leaving the agency. It would be easy to find him if anyone wanted revenge, but that was rare. Most criminals went after other criminals who ratted them out, not the cops who arrested them. Besides, as far as he knew, all the major suspects from that investigation had all been convicted and were still in prison.

He met Lisa on that case, and thanks to Lisa, the FBI discovered more than the chop shop they were after. The same crime ring was involved in human trafficking, enslaving people to sew knock-off clothing they could then resell for huge profits. It was a nationwide operation, but the manager of the facility operating in Seneca Springs was the sickest of them all. He was a white supremacist who wanted to bring back Black slavery. It made Patrick ill just to think about it. It was unlikely it was anyone from that part of Patrick’s past. The man was probably a fellow private investigator. He’d met a few of them who had rubbed him the wrong way. Not everyone gets into the PI business for the right reasons.

Still, the incident left him feeling uneasy. If he was a fellow PI, who was he working for? Why was he outside the funeral home? The police had their own detectives inside.
